چکیده

INTRODUCTION Metallic foams have been favoured for orthopaedic research and testing purposes for its open-celled, interconnected structure with adjustable densities but without the highly variable and inhomogeneous nature of trabecular bones. Mechanical behaviour of metallic foams has been investigated in numerous studies, although how their properties compare with those of trabecular bones is largely unknown, particularly in the post-yield region. In this study, three metallic foams and bovine trabecular bones were characterized using finite element modeling and mechanical testing. It is hoped that the results of the present study may be useful in the selection of the bone analogue materials as trabecular bone substitutes.

Experimental and numerical characterisation of the elasto-plastic properties of bovine trabecular bone and a trabecular bone analogue.

The inelastic pressure dependent compressive behaviour of bovine trabecular bone is investigated through experimental and computational analysis. Two loading configurations are implemented, uniaxial and confined compression, providing two distinct loading paths in the von Mises-pressure stress plane. Experimental results reveal distinctive yielding followed by a constant nominal stress plateau ...

An experimental and computational investigation of the post-yield behaviour of trabecular bone during vertebral device subsidence.

Interbody fusion device subsidence has been reported clinically. An enhanced understanding of the mechanical behaviour of the surrounding bone would allow for accurate predictions of vertebral subsidence. The multiaxial inelastic behaviour of trabecular bone is investigated at a microscale and macroscale level. The post-yield behaviour of trabecular bone under hydrostatic and confined compressi...

Compressive behaviour of bovine cancellous bone and bone analogous materials, microCT characterisation and FE analysis.

Compressive behaviour of bovine cancellous bone and three open-cell metallic foams (AlSi7Mg (30 ppi and 45 ppi); CuSn12Ni2 (30 ppi)) has been studied using mechanical testing, micro-focus computed tomography and finite element modelling. Whilst the morphological parameters of the foams and the bone appear to be similar, the mechanical properties vary significantly between the foams and the bone...

Indirect determination of trabecular bone effective tissue failure properties using micro-finite element simulations.

Trabecular bone strength is marked not only by the onset of local yielding, but also by post-yield behavior. To study and predict trabecular bone elastic and yield properties, micro-finite element (micro-FE) models were successfully applied. However, trabecular bone strength predictions require micro-FE models incorporating post-yield behavior of trabecular bone tissue. Due to experimental diff...

Micro-finite element simulation of trabecular-bone post-yield behaviour--effects of material model, element size and type.

Micro-finite element (micro-FE) analysis became a standard tool for the evaluation of trabecular bone mechanical properties. The accuracy of micro-FE models for linear analyses is well established. However, the accuracy of recently developed nonlinear micro-FE models for simulations of trabecular bone failure is not known. In this study, a trabecular bone specimen was compressed beyond the appa...
